The Department of Sports Orthopedics, Sports Traumatology, Sports Medicine and Shoulder and Elbow Surgery is offering a wide range of medical services to athletes and patients.

Prof. Dr. Volker Schöffl, MHBA is a qualified specialist in General Surgery, Orthopedic and Trauma Surgery and Sports Medicine. Our focus is to deliver the highest possible standard of care not only to our high level athletes but to all our patients. Together with the sport scientist Julia Emmler we also perform sports medical functional analysis, motion analysis and spiroergometric cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

Prof. Dr. Volker Schöffl is Adjunct Professor of Trauma and Orthopedic Surgery at the FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg and Adjoint Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Prof. Dr. Volker Schöffl is the team doctor of the German Climbing Team and the German Skimountaineering Team. The whole team is very active in research in sportsmedicine and regularly gives lectures at national and international meetings.

We provide:

  • all up to date and cutting edge procedures, conventionally or arthroscopically to all joints (e.g. anterior and posterior cruciate ligament repair, including double bundle and Ligamys, ALL repair, MPFL, shoulder labrum and rotator cuff repairs, arthroscopic procedures to all joints, including wrist, hip and subtalar joint, finger pulley repairs and other climbing specific hand surgeries, cartilage repair techniques (e.g. MACHT, AMIC, OATS) etc.
  • conservative: ultrasound, MRI, injections, PRP, acupuncture, plaster casts, orthotics, taping, kinesiotape, orthesis, chiropractic and many others.
  • All arthoscopic procedures e.g. labrum repair, rotator cuff repair, SLAP lesions
  • All procedures in acute trauma e.g. humeral head fractures, collar bone fractures, AC separations
  • Arthroplasty: Partial (Eclipse) or complete (Lima), anatomical, reversed or tumor arthroplasty
  • Muscle transfers e.g. latissimus dorsi or pectoralis major transfers
  • Nerve decompressions and transfers
  • Spiroergometry
  • Cardiopulmonary exercise testing

  • Functional compartment measurement under specific stress conditions

Travel information

The closest airport is in Nuremberg which is 60 km from Bamberg. Other options are Frankfurt am Main or Munich, both about 1h 45 min away by car.

Nuremberg airport itself is connected to the public transportation system by subway, which connects you via Nuremberg Central Station directly to a train to Bamberg. From Bamberg main station to Bamberg hospital (Klinikum Bamberg) it takes about 10 min by taxi, or 30 min by public transportation (bus).

Accommodation

Bamberg, as a tourist attraction and World Cultural Heritage Site offers a wide range of accommodation, from 5 Star hotels to Youth hostels.

Billing

We are billing in accordance to the German medical fee schedule. Many foreign insurances cover at least part of the bill, especially in Europe. Please contact your insurance company.

Emergency treatments are generally covered by your insurance. For elective consults and surgery it is hopsital policy to pay at the day of consultation for outpatients and in advance for in-house patients surgery.
